Jaime Martínez Llabrés announces at the ITB in Berlin the implementation of a comprehensive action plan to reposition Platja de Palma with an investment of over 21 million euros.
The area will have a security action plan with a significant deployment of resources this season
Palma, March 4, 2025.- Jaime Martínez Llabrés has presented today at the ITB in Berlin the strategy that the municipal government team is working on to position Platja de Palma as a reference destination, linked to the quality of the offer and services.
In this regard, the mayor has outlined the main lines of an extensive action plan that is being developed, where sustainability, environment, improvement and new equipment, mobility, and a security action plan that will be operational this season play a decisive role.
Martínez Llabrés has framed this set of actions in the need to reposition this mature tourist area and make the necessary investments to improve services and infrastructure, while continuing with the transformation of accommodation, dining, and leisure offerings.
The first councilor of Cort has mentioned the intention to get the Spanish government to create a Commissioner for the Rehabilitation of Mature Tourist Areas, with Platja de Palma as a pilot project, a decision that «would allow for more investments and faster progress towards excellence.»
However, he regretted that the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, to whom he made the request, showed no interest in promoting this commissioner.
In this situation, Martínez Llabrés recalled that in 2004 a «masterplan for the transformation of Platja de Palma was initiated, which was stopped by the Pact», and later, «in 2012, with the approval of the Tourism Law, investment and transformation of part of the hotel offer in Platja de Palma was facilitated, but in 2015 it was also halted with the change of government.»
«Unfortunately, after 20 years, we have to talk again about the transformation and repositioning of Platja de Palma; but we are here to continue that project we started in 2004 and continued in 2012,» the mayor emphasized. Hence the urgent need to address the essential transformation of the area, with real investments and an action plan that Martínez Llabrés has outlined the main lines of, pending a more detailed presentation to take place in the coming weeks.
He first mentioned environmental improvement actions in various areas, which will result in the modernization and enhancement of the pedestrian promenade on the waterfront that will be connected by environmental connectors, landscape corridors, and civic axes to a posterior landscape path limiting with rustic land, creating a network that gives cohesion to the whole. The conversion of Dino Golf into a large green lung for the area and the renaturalization of the Maravellas square are also planned. Likewise, the preservation and recovery of the natural environment in Es Carnatge are expected.
In terms of mobility, new parking lots are projected, including one on the surface in Las Maravillas; the expansion of the BiciPalma station network, as well as the improvement of connectivity provided by the new Palma-Llucmajor train line with stops at significant points in Platja de Palma.
The action plan also includes the provision of sports and cultural facilities.
Alongside these actions, the implementation of measures focused on improving and modernizing accommodation establishments and complementary offerings is planned through modernization and quality plans.
In this line, the mayor pointed out that the 25% of tourism places that could not opt for conversion at the time will be given the opportunity to increase in quality, «as was done with the other 75%.»
«We need to walk together in the same direction, public sector, accommodation, complementary offering, and leisure.»
Martínez Llabrés also emphasized the commitment to security in Platja de Palma, which translates into an action plan involving a significant increase in personnel and material resources, which will be operational this season. He also recalled the upcoming entry into force of the Civic Ordinance, which has a clear purpose of guaranteeing coexistence between residents and tourists, responding to the demands that merchants, entrepreneurs, associations, and the entire productive and citizen fabric of Platja de Palma have been making over the past years.
As stated by the mayor, the priority is the implementation of this set of actions with the aim of improving the quality of life for residents and restoring the quality brand that has always characterized Platja de Palma worldwide, especially to the main emitting destinations.
From this perspective, the mayor emphasized that public administrations must drive this transformation process, hand in hand with companies and the productive fabric.
