Ajuntament and Govern present the draft of the future IES Son Ferriol, with 1,247 places and an estimated investment of 20 million euros.
Cort is already executing the provision of services in the area, which also includes the construction of the fairground and new socio-sanitary facilities.
The deputy mayor Lourdes Roca and the Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, have highlighted the commitment of both institutions to expand and improve the educational infrastructure of Palma.
Palma, June 19, 2025.- The second deputy mayor and councilor of Education, Lourdes Roca, and the Minister of Education of the Balearic Islands Government, Antoni Vera, presented this Thursday the draft of the future Secondary Education Institute (IES) Son Ferriol, fulfilling a historical demand of the area for more than three decades.
Also present at the presentation were the regional secretary of Educational Development, Mateu Suñer; the manager of IBISEC, Marco Alarcón; the architect of the project, Guillem Quetglas, as well as members of the educational community and representatives of the Parents Association of CEIP Son Ferriol, Casa Blanca, and IES Josep Sureda i Blanes, in addition to the neighborhood association.
The new IES Son Ferriol will offer 1,247 new places distributed between ESO, Bachillerato, and Vocational Training, and will be built on a municipal plot of more than 70,000 m² located next to the Universitari Son Llàtzer Hospital.
The project was declared an investment of regional interest in September 2024 and has an estimated investment of 20 million euros.
Once started, the works will last approximately two years, with the aim of opening the center in the 2028-2029 school year.
During her speech, Roca emphasized the importance of this educational facility for Palma: «The IES Son Ferriol will strengthen the network of public centers, allowing to cope with the demographic growth that the city is experiencing.»
Likewise, she thanked the Balearic Islands Government for «the commitment to the construction of this center, which will be key for a neighborhood with historical deficiencies in public infrastructure and will represent a substantial improvement in the educational quality and offer in Palma.»
Similarly, Minister Antoni Vera stressed that this is «one of the most important projects for the city of Palma, a cross-cutting project that will bring about a significant change in the educational map of the city.»
A modern and versatile institute
The IES Son Ferriol will have six lines of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), with 24 units and 2 classrooms of Curricular Diversification Program (PDC), three lines of Bachillerato, a UEECO classroom for students with special educational needs, and 250 places for Vocational Training in basic, intermediate, and higher degrees, specialized in the agricultural sector, environmental management, and sustainability.
Specifically, 1 Basic Degree Cycle (CFGB) in Agro-gardening and Floral Compositions, with 2 groups (50 places) and 3 Medium Degree Cycles (CFGM): Agricultural Production, Gardening and Floristry, and Use and Conservation of the Natural Environment, with a total of 6 groups (150 places).
It is worth noting that the center will also welcome students from ESO and Bachillerato of the current IES Nou Llevant, which will become an integrated Vocational Training center.
On the other hand, as explained by the deputy mayor, the IES Son Ferriol is part of the different strategic projects and of the city that the city council is promoting «always oriented to the service of the citizens and with a clear vision of the future.»
«From day one, this Government team is focused on solving the demands of the neighbors and the needs of the different neighborhoods, working so that everyone has good public transport connections, suitable facilities, green areas, and quality services,» she added.
In this line, Roca recalled the urban transformation process in the area, adjacent to the Son Llàtzer Hospital and strategically connected to the future Palma-Llucmajor railway line, where other key infrastructures will be developed, such as the fairground, for which Cort has already approved the competition bases of ideas, and that «will provide the city with a modern and versatile space to host cultural, business, and social events, contributing to revitalizing the local economy.»
Likewise, the City Council will hand over the houses of the Possesió de Son Llàtzer to the Government for the construction of a socio-sanitary facility.
On the other hand, Roca detailed the improvements that the City Council is carrying out in the neighborhood, such as the renovation of sidewalks and pavements within the Renovation Plan, the creation of more green areas in the Son Ferriol park, and the reform of the playground in the main square of the neighborhood.
Expansion and improvement of educational infrastructures in Palma
During his speech, Minister Vera highlighted the Government’s commitment to Palma to expand and improve educational infrastructures, putting an end to years of lack of investment.
Thus, through the Infrastructure Plan that the Government is promoting over a ten-year period, the creation of 27 new centers is planned: 11 nursery and primary schools, 5 secondary education institutes, 2 integrated vocational training centers, a special regime center, an adult education center, 3 higher education buildings, and 4 buildings for university education.
In addition, the expansion of 17 centers and the completion of 59 structural reforms are planned.
Specifically, Vera detailed that for the next school year, the new CEI Tramuntana will be launched, the expansion works of the IES La Ribera to increase the places in secondary and high school will be carried out, and the offer of Vocational Training at the IES Ses Estacions will be expanded.
Other planned actions highlighted include the conversion of the IES Politècnic into a Vocational Training center and the expansion of places for 0 to 3 years at the CEIP Felip Bauçà.
In the same line, the City Council will hand over a plot for the construction of the new IES Son Cladera, as well as other contiguous lands to La FEMU for the creation of more educational places for 0 to 3 years.
It is also worth mentioning the future District of the Arts of Palma, where new facilities are planned next to the Conservatory such as a new university residence and the construction of the Institut de les Arts, which will have three new buildings: the Higher Conservatory of Music, the Higher School of Dramatic Art, and the Higher School of Design.
