The Spanish National Police have arrested a worker who was cleaning cars for a rental company at the Palma airport for allegedly keeping a watch and a diamond bracelet, valued at 21,000 euros, that had been forgotten in a car.
The incident took place last weekend when a tourist finishing his vacation in Mallorca was returning the rental vehicle he had used during his travels but left a backpack with various items inside.
In a press release, the police explained that upon realizing his mistake and reporting the missing backpack, the jewelry was no longer in it. The tourist then went to the National Police station to file a report.
The officers at the National Police Station at Son Sant Joan airport conducted an investigation to clarify the situation. As a result of their efforts, they arrested the employee as the suspected perpetrator of the theft. The investigators were able to recover the stolen items and return them to the rightful owner.
The National Police reminded airport users of the importance of being vigilant with their belongings, especially in crowded areas or when using public transportation, or when picking up or dropping off a vehicle in the parking lot.
It is also emphasized that to avoid potential criminal and disciplinary responsibilities in the workplace, it is advisable for workers to hand over any found items to the municipal Lost and Found services or relevant departments in the facility. A document should be issued as proof of the handover.
This process facilitates the rightful owner to locate their belongings. If two years pass without the owner claiming the items, the finder can legally claim them, as stipulated by the Civil Code.
