The socialist group in the Consell de Mallorca has criticized the rejection of a motion by the PP and Vox to demand the dismissal of the ‘popular’ spokesperson in the island institution, Núria Riera, and has held the President of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, responsible for the «cover-up» of the spokesperson.
The socialist initiative, debated in Thursday’s plenary session, called for the return of the amounts that Riera has received «irregularly» this legislature, according to the PSOE, «without having the compatibility granted and without proving attendance at her job as a CAIB official.»
The deputy spokesperson of the socialist group, Javier de Juan, has held Galmés responsible for the «cover-up» of Riera, considering that he «lies» by claiming that it is necessary to wait for the reports from the Govern on this matter.
«He knows perfectly well that his spokesperson has held press conferences, attended talk shows, and participated in party events, all during her working hours as an official,» he criticized. Furthermore, he asserted that the ‘popular’ councilor has not «requested or obtained» compatibility to carry out her work as an official.
According to the socialists, the reports that the PP provides to defend the legality of Riera «are actually to justify the salary increase of 20,000 euros at the beginning of the legislature.»
In this regard, he referred to the «radical» change in Riera’s dedication to the tasks of the PP spokesperson, pointing out that in the last month she has stopped holding press conferences and party events. In his opinion, this is «the clearest evidence of the illegality of Riera’s conduct.»
TRANSFER OF WASTE FROM IBIZA
On the other hand, the socialists have highlighted in the plenary session the «inconsistency» of the government team regarding the transfer of waste from Ibiza to be incinerated in Mallorca.
De Juan referred to the statements of the insular councilor of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, opening the door to importing the waste, after the Environment minister, Pedro Bestard, denied this possibility.
«How do we stand, Mr. Galmés, are you negotiating with the President of the Insular Council of Ibiza, Vicente Marí, or not?» the socialist asked.
Likewise, he criticized the government team’s management of waste, stating that they «promised a 10 percent reduction in the fee that has not occurred, made an extraordinary contribution of 62 million euros from surpluses, and in March 2025 they still have not approved the fee for this year.»
SOCIALIST MOTIONS
The island council has approved a motion from the PSOE regarding unwanted loneliness, which calls for the implementation of a strategy from the administrations with specialized detection and care programs, in consensus with social agents and the Observatory of Older Persons.
The socialist councilor Beatriu Gamundí appealed to the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) to «prevent this extreme lack of protection» for people who are left without a family or social network in a situation of isolation that affects their well-being.
On the other hand, the socialists have presented another initiative to prevent the «total privatization» of the Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV) service, something they presume the island government plans to do through an administrative simplification decree.
The group’s spokesperson in the Consell, Catalina Cladera, defended the internalization of the service and its workers in a similar way to what has been done in the social field with the staff of the Miquel Mir and Germanetes residences. The motion was rejected in the plenary session.
