Palma y Varsovia se unen para honrar a Chopin con exposición y conciertos

Palma and Warsaw come together to celebrate Chopin’s relationship with the Balearic capital through a collaboration agreement that includes a major exhibition and a series of concerts.

The agreement between the City Council of Palma and the Fryderyk Chopin National Institute was signed in the courtyard of Can Oms by the deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, Javier Bonet, and the director of the museum dedicated to the Polish musician and composer, Seweryn Kuter.

Palma, June 18, 2025. The courtyard of Can Oms hosted the signing of the collaboration agreement between the City Council of Palma and the Fryderyk Chopin National Institute, based in Warsaw. The event also included the presentation of the exhibition ‘Som a Palma! El viatge romàntic de Fryderyk Chopin i George Sand’, which will open on Thursday at the Municipal Archive of Palma, located in the Can Bordils building.

The cooperation document was signed by the deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, Javier Bonet, and the director of the Fryderyk Chopin Museum, Seweryn Kuter. Also present at the table were the Director General of Heritage and Interpretation of the City, Pilar Ribal, and one of the coordinators of the initiative, Konrad Tollozcko.

The exhibition ‘Som a Palma!’, which will be unveiled on Thursday at 7 pm at Can Bordils, will be the first of the joint cultural activities outlined in the collaboration agreement between the City Council of Palma and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute.

Next, the partnership with this prestigious Polish entity will lead to a series of piano concerts performed by musicians deeply connected to the figure and work of Chopin.

On June 28 and July 19, two concerts will take place at Bellver Castle. The first will feature Mateusz Krzyzowski, a 26-year-old pianist already considered one of the most promising musicians not only in Poland but worldwide.

The second concert will showcase the exceptional piano skills of Piotr Alexewicz, a leading figure in his generation.

Furthermore, the agreement includes two more piano concerts: on September 13 at Can Balaguer and on October 19 at the Xesc Forteza Municipal Theater.

This collaboration with the Fryderyk Chopin National Institute will kick off on Thursday with an exhibition dedicated to recalling the time the immortal Polish musician and his partner, George Sand, spent on the island with their son, Maurice Sand.

The exhibition will feature valuable documents from the Chopin Institute, including handwritten letters exchanged between Chopin and George Sand, original paintings and engravings from the era, as well as historically significant publications and documents.

Noteworthy contributions by Rosa Capllonch Ferrà include jewelry once owned by George Sand, a bronze bust of Chopin, and other intriguing objects.

According to the councilor, the inauguration of this exhibition «will mark a strong start to our collaboration with the Chopin Institute, which we hope to continue and which, for the City Council of Palma, is of utmost importance.»

The collaboration will not only shed light on «Chopin’s connection to the city of Palma but also strengthen cultural ties with the significant European city of Warsaw.»

The councilor also expressed confidence that such initiatives «will enhance Palma’s credibility as a European Capital of Culture in 2031.»

It’s worth noting that during the same event, the Fryderyk Chopin National Institute, represented by Seweryn Kuter, signed a manifesto in support of the candidacy.
