Peter Halley elige el Casal Solleric para su primera muestra en España desde 1992.

Peter Halley chooses Casal Solleric to carry out his first individual exhibition in Spain since 1992, co-produced by the Ajuntament de Palma and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.

The New York artist attended the exhibition presentation, which will be inaugurated this Saturday, and shared the stage with the mayor, Jaime Martínez Llabrés; the artistic director of Thyssen, Guillermo Solana, and collectors Blanca and Borja Thyssen

Palma, March 21, 2025. The Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez Llabrés, presented on Friday the exhibition ‘Peter Halley in Spain’, co-produced by the Ajuntament and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, showcasing a collection of twenty works by the New York artist, considered one of the main references of his generation.

This is Halley’s first individual exhibition in Spain since 1992, when he exhibited his creations at the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía. The inauguration is scheduled for this Saturday, March 22, at noon, as part of the new edition of Art Palma Brunch. The exhibition will be open on the ground floor and mezzanine of Casal Solleric until May 25.

Before being presented in Palma, the retrospective, which explores Halley’s production between 1985 and 2024 through works from public and private collections, was on display at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid until January 19.

The presentation was attended by the artist, as well as the curator of the exhibition and artistic director of Thyssen, Guillermo Solana, and collectors Blanca and Borja Thyssen. The Mayor of Palma thanked them for the collaboration with Ajuntament, which, as he indicated, will allow for «many other pioneering, innovative, and unprecedented cultural actions within the city’s exhibition offer» in the future.

Martínez Llabrés also highlighted the «extraordinary work» being done by the municipal Culture department, led by Deputy Mayor Javier Bonet and General Coordinator of Culture and Tourism, Fernando Gómez de la Cuesta, with the goal of continuing to advance «towards achieving the cultural capital of 2031.»

Born in New York in 1953, Peter Halley rose to prominence in the mid-80s as a driving force behind the neo-conceptualist movement. His work is characterized by the use of geometry as a fundamental support for artistic production, while not shying away from figurative references.

Among the themes that characterize Halley’s creative universe, his concern for the relationship between space and time stands out, as well as his commitment to delving into the skeleton of the urban landscape through the reproduction of rectangular geometric forms connected through behaviors, diagrams, and isolated organisms.

In addition to the opening event this Saturday, the exhibition ‘Peter Halley in Spain,’ which includes eight drawings not featured in the Madrid exhibition during its time in Palma, offers other complementary activities. This includes a conversation that Halley will share today at 7 PM at Es Baluard-Museu d’Art Contemporani with the project’s curator, Guillermo Solana, and art expert Enrique Juncosa.

Likewise, on March 29 and April 26, cultural mediator Noèlia Gómez will lead a training workshop on Halley’s exhibition titled ‘The Magic Square,’ specially designed for families with children aged five and above.

‘Tic Tac,’ by Joana Cera

Furthermore, the informative meeting on Friday also introduced the exhibition ‘Tic Tac,’ by Catalan artist Joana Cera, curated by Asun Clar, which will also be inaugurated this Saturday as part of the Art Palma Brunch agenda. It will be on display at the Aljub of Casal Solleric until May 25.

Born in Barcelona in 1965, Joana Cera’s project utilizes a combination of different artistic specialties, such as sculpture, photography, sound performance, and audiovisual resources to express her reflections on political, social, and environmental conflicts affecting the world.

The exhibition comprises a total of eight proposals, including the stone sculpture titled ‘Clau Clau,’ the glass and sand sculpture created by the author during a creative stay organized by the Fundación Santa María de Albarracín, a mural application with Mallorcan clay, and an audiovisual projection showing a hand dismantling the QR code of a sculptural piece.
