The Mixed Commission (Congress and Senate) of Insularity has approved an initiative by MÉS per Mallorca to urge the Government to return to Mallorca the ceremonial helmet, known as the ‘Cimera’, of King Martín the Human, as well as other heritage pieces currently located in the Royal Armory of Madrid.
The motion – a non-binding initiative – has received support from the PP, while the PSOE and Vox have voted against it. According to the text, the set includes: the Cimera of King Martín, the alleged sword of King James I, a rodella (shield), a breastplate, bombards, a two-handed sword, and a chair and stirrups.
During his intervention, the PP representative explained that he would not support the first point if voted separately, but he did anticipate his affirmative vote as it was a single motion.
After the debate on the motion, the president of the commission, José Antonio Valbuena, addressed the representative of Sumar to inform him that the amendments could be voted on separately, but the latter reaffirmed that the motion should be voted on as a whole.
The most controversial amendment, that of the return of heritage assets, was followed by a request to temporarily return the ceremonial helmet for the ‘l’Estendard’ festival in 2029, in commemoration of the 800 years since the Christian conquest of Mallorca.
In the rationale, it is argued that the pieces are «key to the historical and cultural heritage of Mallorca» and reaffirms that their heritage value is «enhanced» in their original context.
Likewise, the text informs that the return of the assets would facilitate research by local experts, comply with the principle of historical reparation, and strengthen the historical and heritage awareness of the city.
